Holly Nickel serves as the Coalitions & Equity Manager for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. In this role, Holly facilitates the creation of healthy, accessible, and safe communities across the nation through active transportation policy. Bringing an equity lens to all work, Holly is passionate about placemaking and the impact it can have on the health and vitality of marginalized communities.

Previously, Holly worked at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) in several roles. Most recently, she led the Building Healthy Communities program to increase access to physical activity and healthy eating opportunities through policy, environment, and systems change statewide. Prior to the Building Healthy Communities program, Holly served as the Health Equity Coordinator where she was instrumental in the elevation of health equity and strategies to concretely institutionalize it within state-level public health. She also led the Safe Routes to School grant program aimed at increasing safe opportunities for youth to walk and bike to school.

While employed with MDHHS, Holly co-founded and led a networking group for professionals of color. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at Michigan State University and a Master of Public Health from the University of Toledo, where she focused on health education and promotion. In her spare time, when she is not braving Michigan winters, she enjoys gardening and weekend trips to Lake Michigan.
