Nevada SRTS Federal Funding

Nevada’s SRTS funding from FY2005-2009* totals $5,598,903 and includes the following annual apportionments:

2005 Actual 2006 Actual 2007 Actual 2008 Actual 2009 Actual
$1,000,000 $900,000 $1,000,000 $1,152,500 $1,456,403

* Funding for SRTS is being continued into FY2010 at FY2009 levels.

Application Guidelines

Nevada has the one set of application guidelines for infrastructure and non-infrastructure grants. Following the federal guidelines, Nevada allocates 30 percent of funds towards non-infrastructure projects and 70 percent towards infrastructure. All applications must be sponsored by a government entity (e.g., school district, city, county, etc.). In Nevada’s first round of funding approximately 1.6 million dollars were obligated. Nevada’s second round of funding was opened for application submittal on October 15, 2008 and will close January 16, 2009.

Schools and communities are encouraged to develop SRTS Plans to assess local infrastructure and education needs. The application process helps guide them through key steps.

For more information, please see Nevada’s SRTS program.

State Advisory Committee

Nevada did not form a new State Advisory Committee for SRTS because the existing Bicycle Advisory Board had all the attributes of a SRTS committee. The members are appointed by the governor and meet every other month. It consists of fourteen members: seven state agencies and seven public members. For more information on committee members and their organizations, see http://www.bicyclenevada.com/bd_member.html.

The committee ranks applications for funding and makes recommendations to the DOT Director on which programs should be awarded.

State Outreach Programs

The Nevada Department of Public Safety has a Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education Program. This program administers traffic and bicycle safety workshops and education programs for teachers, community volunteers, law enforcement officers, and recreation leaders. It also provides funding for education and enforcement programs related to Pedestrian and Bicycle safety.

Evaluation Methods

Nevada requires the use of the FHWA Student Arrival and Departure Tally Sheet and Take Home Parent Survey. Both evaluation forms can be found at Nevada’s Safe Routes website.

Legislation and Policies

The 2005 Legislature mandated a report (AB 231) from Nevada’s two most populous counties—Clark and Washoe—examining walking conditions within one mile of elementary schools. The counties submitted these reports to the Assembly Transportation Committee at the beginning of the 2007 session. No further action was taken.
