Success Stories and Best Practices
Fayetteville, AR SRTS Education Grant Update
By the end of the year, every third through fifth grader in Arkansas public schools will have completed a 6-unit Physical Education Bike ED curriculum thanks to the Safe Routes to School Education Grant to the Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks.
Thousands of children are being fit with new helmets and presented with the basic principles of predictable, visible assertive cycling. With a combination of in-class practice and discussion, walk-through right-of-way drills and on-bike drills courses, the children are learning that bicycles are a safe, convenient, healthy and enjoyable form of transportation that requires skill and alertness.
Already, after completion at one elementary school, the students are exhibiting a more thorough knowledge of the Rules of the Road and the Arkansas State Vehicle Code. Student feedback has been positive, and we look forward to seeing if bicycle commuting increases when we conduct another "post bike ED" SRTS Student Travel Tally report.
