State Network Update
February 2010
Project Highlights
The State Network Project finished its first three-year grant period on December 14, 2009. A full report on our accomplishments in all ten jurisdictions, entitled Safe Routes to School State Network Project: Final Report, 2007-2009 can be downloaded here. Below are some highlights from the 2007-2009 State Network Project:
- More than 200 partners actively participated in the ten networks, including state and regional agencies, elected officials, advocacy organizations, universities, and local Safe Routes to School program leaders.
- Networks helped to get several state Safe Routes to school programs launched and helped to make grant selections in some states, and in all ten jurisdictions contributed to increased program quality and streamlined application processes, and generated community interest and expertise through outreach and trainings.
- Networks inspired new funding streams, and influenced hundreds of millions of dollars of other funds, such as federal highway safety improvement program funds, stimulus funds, road maintenance funds, green building and school siting funds, and hurricane relief funds.
- Networks worked to get new state laws implemented, such as complete streets, climate change, safe routes to school, and school safety.
- Networks participated in or helped to organize and lead state Safe Routes to School conferences, and promoted Safe Routes to School at many other conferences in their states.
- Five networks received grant funding to improve state policies that protect neighborhood schools. Three networks were invited to submit policy language changes to departments of education in order to improve school siting and promote joint-use of facilities.
These are a sampling of the accomplishments of the three-year state network project. There were also a number of lessons learned, and network organizers shared successes and challenges and brainstormed solutions on a monthly basis. The top five lessons learned are included in the full report. These accomplishments and lessons learned will be taken forward to inform the 2010-2011 State Network Project, which is expanding into twenty states. An announcement of the launch of the 2010-2011 State Network Project, including a list of the participating twenty jurisdictions, will be included in the January 2010 edition of E-News.
