Application Guidelines In November 2009, Pennsylvania’s Safe Routes to School Academy in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation awarded 30 grants to over 30 schools across Pennsylvania, totaling $150,000. Each school will receive $5,000 to use towards Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation activities. In addition to the $5,000 grant, each school will receive a free two-day walkability audit, during which a team of trained experts (engineers, transportation planners, and advocates) will observe main walking routes to school and develop a comprehensive plan on how to improve the safety of those routes through infrastructure changes. For more information, please read the press release.
Pennsylvania awarded $16.8 million in Federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding in June 2009 that will benefit communities across the Commonwealth. From the 101 applications that were received, 30 projects that serve to enhance walking and bicycling facilities around K-8 schools were selected. Funded projects include infrastructure improvements such as sidewalk repair or replacement, crosswalks, walk/bike paths, signs, signals, and other traffic calming features.
The projects were selected by Pennsylvania’s SRTS Project Selection Committee, which consists of members from the Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation, Education, Health, and Conservation and Natural Resources, as well as the Federal Highways Administration and the Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA). Additionally, Pennsylvania’s Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Rural Planning Organizations provided feedback on each project in their region. The projects selected best exemplify the core principles of Safe Routes to School, including the five E’s of SRTS: education, encouragement, enforcement, evaluation, and engineering.
For more information about infrastructure funding opportunities in Pennsylvania, please visit Pennsylvania’s Safe Routes to School website.
To date, five projects from Pennsylvania’s 2005-2006 Transportation Enhancements funding round were selected to receive federal SRTS funding, since they meet the federal requirements. The total cost of the projects is $1,196,687.
The Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA) administer the non-infrastructure application and funding process. More information about PANA and The Safe Routes to School Academy is available below.
