*SPECIAL INDIANA NOTE: Please note that it cannot be guaranteed that the full amount of apportionments will be available for distribution. Due to spending limitations for the 2006 application cycle, which also included funds from 2005, just over $2 million was available for worthy activities and projects.
Application Guidelines Indiana’s second call for applications took place from May 1-June 29, 2007. The grant awards were announced in November of 2007. A total of 55 applications were received seeking $9.24 million. Of that total, 13 proposals (10 infrastructure and 3 non-infrastructure) were awarded for $2.36 million. Implementation of the projects will probably start in 2008.
Guidelines for infrastructure projects and non-infrastructure activities are not separated. Beginning in 2007, Indiana required student tally sheets and parent surveys to be summarized and included with all applications. Indiana is also emphasizing comprehensive SRTS planning and partnerships to ensure the success of SRTS techniques and projects.
The 2008 SRTS application and guide has been released and is posted on the Indiana SRTS Webpage. The 2008 application and guide are intended to improve upon and replace the 2007 versions of these documents.

State Advisory Committee The Indiana SRTS Advisory Committee was formed in April of 2006 to review and discuss applications for federal SRTS funds. The Advisory Committee includes seven members from the INDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, the Indiana Department of Health, the Indiana Department of Education, and Indiana’s metropolitan planning organizations. The Committee met three times in 2007.
State Outreach Programs The Indiana SRTS program is considering training opportunities in multiple locations in Indiana. There may be fees, but it is possible there will be no fees and participants will only be responsible for their own travel expenses, food and drink.
Most outreach currently involves personal visits to interested communities, notification to DOT district Local Public Agency Coordinators who disseminate relevant information to schools, school districts and local officials and frequent updates to the DOT SRTS Webpage regarding new procedures, survey instruments, photos, specific guidelines for particular tactics and important program announcements. The SRTS Webpage took on a new look in late 2007.
Evaluation Methods Indiana now requires all actions, infrastructure or non-infrastructure, to be supported by student tallies and parent surveys before and after the implementation of a project or activity to measure improvements in the numbers of students walking and biking to school. Schools may also perform their own surveys if the information helps them improve their local SRTS programs.
