Get Involved

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) movement offers many ways for individuals, organizations, public agencies, schools, and companies to get involved and make a difference at the local, state, and even national levels. And SRTS programs aren’t just for parents, teachers, and students. All community members—from health organizations and bicycle and pedestrian advocates to local police officers and business owners—can contribute to the success of a SRTS program.

Find out how you can get involved now!

Local
Contact your local school or your city government to find out if your community already has a SRTS program in place. Local programs are often looking for volunteers for special events like “Walk and Bike to School Day” or individuals willing to help with “walking school buses”. If your community does not have a SRTS program, here's how you can get started locally.

State
In 2005, Congress approved $612 million to establish federal SRTS funding for programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each State Department of Transportation (DOT) is receiving a minimum of $1 million per fiscal year through 2009 for Safe Routes to School efforts. Each State DOT is charged with creating a full-time state SRTS coordinator.

See where your state stands in implementing its SRTS programs. Contact your state. Get involved to help make your state program a success.

National
