Now that the application deadline for Cycle 5 of the Active Transportation Program has passed, we’ve got some details on the number and amount of requests submitted. While evaluations are underway and decisions won’t be announced until 2020, here’s what we know so far:
- 453 total applications were submitted, which is nearly 20 percent less than last cycle. A total of $2.6 billion was requested by those applications, which is about 10 percent higher than the last cycle. While some of the reduction in number of applications is likely due to the pandemic, the trend continues of fewer applications being submitted, but that projects on average have higher price tags.
- Applications come from a total of 253 unique applicants, 27 of which are first-time applicants.
- 93 percent of applications (403 in all) have claimed disadvantaged community status, which will be verified and scored for severity in the evaluations.
- More than half of applications (244) are for Safe Routes to School projects.
- There were 364 projects totaling $1.8 billion submitted in the ten largest metro areas that will be eligible for MPO funding if they do not get selected in the state competition.
- A total of 90 applications requesting $476 million were submitted from smaller areas, which are eligible for the Small Urban and Rural pot, as well as the statewide pot.
