Dave Janis
Dave Janis serves as the state network manager for the Safe Routes to School state network project overseeing seven states. Dave will be focused on helping these states implement the three policy priorities of awarding and obligating federal Safe Routes to School and Transportation Enhancements funds, facilitating additional street-scale improvements through the adoption of Complete Streets and advancing joint-use agreements between cities and school districts.
Dave comes to us after nine years at the Bicycle Alliance of Washington, and while there, he served for three years on the Safe Routes to School National Partnership Steering Committee. He also developed the Bicycle Alliance’s Safe Routes to School Program and gave it a statewide presence. This included co-creating and co-managing the Center for Safe Routes to School in Washington State. Dave directed a pilot program that trained school districts all over Washington on safe bicycling and walking, which in turn allowed them to train their students. He also participated on the Washington State DOT’s committee reviewing Safe Routes to School grant applications, advised the agency on making program improvements, and co-led over 20 trainings around the state in applying for funding.
Dave also served as the Bicycle Alliance’s Policy Director working closely with advocates and legislators, which resulted in the passage of important legislation. In addition, he has worked closely with local health departments on Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets and other policy areas. His work with the Seattle Department of Transportation resulted in the installation of more than 200 bike racks in the city and numerous other bicycle-related infrastructure improvements.
Dave is a 24-year Seattle resident and has served as an officer on numerous non-profit boards, including the Washington Coalition to Promote Physical Activity, Transportation Choices Coalition and Friends of the Burke Gilman Trail. He also served on the Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board.
Dave holds a B.A. in Geography/Natural Resources Management and an M.A. in Geography.
