Deb Hubsmith
Director
deb@saferoutespartnership.org

Deb Hubsmith is the founding director of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) National Partnership and provides oversight and direction for all programs, policies, and staff.

Deb has worked on SRTS program implementation and legislative development for more than ten years. She helped lead the successful Marin County SRTS pilot program, and then took the results to the national level where she worked extensively on the campaign to secure the $612 million in federal funds for SRTS that were approved by Congress in 2005 as part of the federal transportation bill SAFETEA-LU. She led efforts in 2007 to ensure approval for California’s AB57, establishing a framework for California state budget appropriations for Safe Routes to School and ensuring $52 million in state funds for the program.

Deb is the author of the report: Safe Routes to School: 2007 State of the States, which she presented to Congress through the Highways and Transit sub-committee on October 2, 2007.  To view Deb's written testimony, click here.

Deb serves as an energetic spokesperson for SRTS, and has presented on the program at numerous conferences, and in high profile forums such as national press conferences, at the Library of Congress, and in the U.S. Capitol. She has published papers on SRTS and also serves on the California Department of Transportation’s SRTS Advisory Committee, and on Federal Highway Administration’s National SRTS Task Force. Deb has received awards for her work from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the American Lung Association, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and other organizations.

She strongly believes that SRTS will play critical role in improving the health of children, communities, and the environment nationwide.
