Justin Fanslau
State Network Manager
justin@saferoutespartnership.org

Justin Fanslau serves as a State Network Manager for the Safe Routes to School State Network Project. He oversees 8 states - California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Montana, Tennessee, Virginia - and 3 regions - Atlanta, GA, District of Columbia, and Los Angeles, CA.

Justin is a seasoned political professional with more than 10 years of legislative, political and communications experience. He has worked in various states, at the local and state level as well as maintained a presence in Washington DC. Justin is no stranger to Safe Routes to School. He has assisted Director Hubsmith on several legislation campaigns in California and in Washington DC, and most recently worked with a newly formed coalition in Hawaii to make sure that Safe Routes to School projects were finding the funding they deserved while raising the profile of the program to the legislature, the media and general public.

Fanslau’s career began as an outreach coordinator for a community health organization. He learned the ropes of true grassroots organizing and policy development through several years of on-the-ground organizing. For the last 10 years, he has been concentrating on developing policy papers, writing and pursuing new legislation, and researching new innovations for change in transportation and land use policy. He spearheaded the formation of the California Complete Streets Coalition. This coalition was responsible for the first statewide complete streets law in the U.S. in 2008. He carried this experience to Hawaii only a year later and that state became the second in the U.S. to adopt a statewide complete streets law. He has advised two Governor’s on complete streets policies.

Prior to joining the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, Justin owned two successful political consulting companies. His work ranged from developing legislation campaigns to managing media and ballot issue campaigns. He specialized in “Active Transportation”. He has a passion for the legislative and political process and experience working on a wide range of issues from health and the environment to transportation and housing.
