2010 Call for Nominations
Steering Committee Members for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership Deadline: May 10, 2010
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership (the Partnership) works to advance the national Safe Routes to School (SRTS) movement. Launched in 2005 in conjunction with passage of the federal SAFETEA-LU authorization, the Partnership now includes more than 450 bicycling and walking groups, health advocates, schools, government agencies, and businesses from across the country. The Partnership is now accepting nominations for several Steering Committee positions. Each organization that holds a seat on the Steering Committee must appoint an individual representative to serve on behalf of his or her organization, and an alternate. Open seats and terms are for three years and include the following:

National Group representing bicyclists (2010-2013)

National Group representing bicyclists and/or pedestrians (2010-2013)
-
National Group representing transportation professionals (2010-2013)
-
National Group – at large representation (2010-2013)
-
State or local bicycle and/or pedestrian group (2010-2013)
-
State or local health group (2010-2013)
-
State or local at large seat (2010-2013)
-
Local school or school district (2010-2011)
The Steering Committee, a diverse group of up to 21 members, functions as the Partnership’s Board of Directors and holds decision-making responsibility for the Partnership. The estimated time commitment for Steering Committee members is eight hours a month.
Applications for the Steering Committee will be judged in part on: organizational involvement in SRTS, individual knowledge and leadership, contribution of specific skills/expertise, and contribution to diversity of the Partnership’s Steering Committee. Nominees who are staff of their organizations are preferred.
All Steering Committee members’ organizations or agencies must:

Actively participate in a local SRTS program or support SRTS programs at local, state and/or national levels by providing technical assistance, funding, and/or other resources; and

Individuals representing nominated organizations or agencies should possess the following characteristics:

Commitment to and knowledge of local, state and/or national SRTS issues;

Familiarity with the governance of non-profit organizations and/or coalitions;
-
Skills and expertise in one or more areas of value to the Partnership and Steering Committee, including but not limited to marketing, communications, advocacy, fundraising, and program development; and
-
Commitment to networking on behalf of the Partnership to secure additional resources from corporations, foundations, and other potential funding sources.
Steering Committee members’ duties and responsibilities include:

Providing policy direction for the Partnership, consistent with the tenets of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by partner affiliates;

Adopting an annual budget and ensuring that adequate financial and other resources are available to advance the Partnership’s vision, mission and goals;
-
Adopting an Annual Action Plan for the Partnership (within the constraints of the annual budget), ensuring that its scope aligns with partner affiliates and advances the parameters of the MOU;
-
Employing the Director of the Partnership;
-
Serving on at least one active Committee of the Partnership;
-
Attending monthly Steering Committee meetings via teleconference, attending the Partnership’s annual meeting, and paying for costs associated with meeting attendance and conference call participation; and
-
Participating actively in email discussions, and replying promptly.
