A Call for Nominations for
Steering Committee Members for the
Safe Routes to School National Partnership
Deadline: May 2, 2008

The Safe Routes to School National Partnership (the Partnership) works to advance the national Safe Routes to School (SRTS) movement. Launched in 2005 in conjunction with passage of the Federal SAFETEA-LU authorization, the Partnership now includes more than 300 bicycling and walking groups, health advocates, schools, government agencies and businesses from across the country.  To view the call for applications, click here.

The Partnership is now accepting nominations for several Steering Committee positions representing government agencies, non-governmental organizations and professional associations. Each organization that holds a seat on the Steering Committee must appoint an individual representative to serve on behalf of his or her organization. Open seats and terms are:

• National pedestrian group – one seat (2008-2011)
• National group representing bicyclists and pedestrians – one seat (2008-2011)
• National group representing local government agencies – one seat (2008-2011)
• State or local bicycle group – one seat (2008-2011)
• State or local bicycle and/or pedestrian group – one seat (2008-2011)
• Local school or school district – one seat (2008-2011)
• State or local at large seat – one seat (2008-2011)
• State or local at large seat – one seat (2007-2010; fills a vacated seat)

The Steering Committee, a diverse group of up to 21 members, functions as the Partnership’s Board of Directors and holds decision-making responsibility for the Partnership. The estimated time commitment for Steering Committee members is eight hours a month.

Applications for the Steering Committee will be judged in part on: organizational involvement in SRTS, individual knowledge and leadership, contribution of specific skills/expertise, and contribution to diversity of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership Steering Committee.

All Steering Committee members’ organizations or agencies must:

• Actively participate in a local SRTS program or support SRTS programs at local, state and/or national levels by providing technical assistance, funding and/or other resources;

• Be an affiliate of the SRTSNP. To become an affiliate, sign our consensus statement and MOU; and

• Agree with the SRTSNP’s Federal SRTS goals for SAFETEA-LU (To view the goals, click here).

Individuals representing nominated organizations or agencies should possess the following characteristics:
• Commitment to and knowledge of local, state and/or national Safe Routes to School issues;

• Familiarity with the governance of non-profit organizations and/or coalitions;

• Skills and expertise in one or more areas of value to the SRTSNP and Steering Committee, including but not limited to marketing, communications, advocacy, fundraising and program development; and

• Commitment to networking on behalf of the SRTSNP to secure additional resources from corporations, foundations and other potential funding sources.

Steering Committee members’ duties and responsibilities include:
• Providing policy direction for the SRTSNP, consistent with the tenets of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by partner affiliates;

• Adopting an annual budget and ensuring that adequate financial and other resources are available to advance the Partnership’s vision, mission and goals;

• Adopting an Annual Action Plan for the Partnership (within the constraints of the annual budget), ensuring that its scope aligns with partner affiliates and advances the parameters of the MOU;

• Hiring/firing the Director for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership;

• Serving on at least one active Committee of the Partnership;

• Attending monthly Steering Committee meetings via teleconference, attending the Partnership’s annual meeting, and paying for costs associated with meeting attendance and conference call participation; and

• Participating actively in email discussions, and replying promptly.
